Q: WHY ARE THE CREMATED REMAINS BUBBLY OR HAVE AN ORGAINC COLOR TO IT, LIKE BROWN, GREEN or ORANGE?

A: Cremated remains are an organic matter and there are two ways the cremation process happens through flame or alkaline hydrolysis (water cremation). When hot glass touches the cremated remains they will turn to a white color from the heat of the hot glass, but some organic matter doesn’t always change leaving some organic coloring. The bubbles happen because the cremated remains off-gases or air can get trapped when making a piece, which is not uncommon.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH HOT GLASS AND CREMATED REMAINS?

A: Glass House has been making memorial glass since 2015. The owner of Glass House has trained in Glass since 2011 learning from various artist nationally and internationally.

Memorial Jewelry

What is Cremation Jewelry?

Cremation Jewelry is jewelry that will holds or has incorporated a small amount of your loved ones ashes. There are many types of cremation jewelry available including small vessels (urns) that hold a small amount of ashes or glass art where the ashes are incorporated into the piece.

Many funeral homes will offer cremation jewelry as part of a cremation package.  You can purchase small vessels that hold a tiny amount of ashes in them to wear around your neck, these can be made of metal (such as a gold cremation urn), plastic, ceramic or glass urn necklace.

There is also a technique called flame working where a small amount of cremated ashes are incorporated right into the glass, this is done while torching the glass picking up the ashes and it gets covered in more glass to encase the ashes.

The glass piece is then made into wearable jewelry by the artist, like pendant, earrings or a bead for a bracelet or ring.

You can find some examples of unique and personalized memorial jewelry here.

Is Cremation Jewelry Creepy?

For some, cremation jewelry may be creepy but for others cremation jewelry brings solace, comfort and a sense of closeness with their dearly departed. Everyone grieves different and finds wellbeing in their own way.

For some, cremation jewelry is a little disturbing and morbid. While others may not be able to do this for religious reasons. Some religions do not believe in cremation or division of the body once cremated.

When my grandmother passed, I created memorial jewelry as well as memorial glass art for myself and many members of my family.  I still cherish the piece that I made.  Every time I wear this necklace , I am reminded of the good times I had with my grandmother.

Can human ashes be made into jewelry

Human remains can be made into glass jewelry.  The ashes can be incorporated into a unique piece of glass for a necklace or pendant, for earrings, a bracelet or ring.  The technique used by artisans who make cremation jewelry is called flame working, torch working, lampworking and also referred to as glass blowing.

To have a unique piece of jewelry made from the ashes of your dearly departed, you would have to send, ship a small amount (1 teaspoon) of the cremated remains to us in order for us to make it into the glass jewelry. We describe the process of shipping and ordering your piece here. *****
